In a post-apocalyptic world, after an apocalypse which is characterized by (as gradually become clear during the movie) war, plague, book burning and cannibalism, a lone survivor wanders the streets and tries his best to hang on to his humanity (in a particularly ironic scene he feeds a rat with the meat of a cat he hunted for dinner , arousing the most justifiable fury of nother cat later…). But none of this will stop him from turning into a deadly fighting machine when attacked, or from not coming to the aid of a woman when it seems too dangerous (and coming to the aid of another woman, in other circumstances...).
He carries with him a rare book that some are willing to kill to get their hands on and use it for their nefarious purposes. The wayfarrer's mission is to bring the book to a safe place where it will be used for the benefit of the survivors of the apocalypse. Will he succeed?
The nature of the book becomes clearer during the movie, although its explicit name is only mentioned at the end, along with the name of the wayfarrer.

בעולם פוסט אפוקליפטי, אחרי אפוקליפסה שבין מאפייניה (שמתבררים בהדרגה במהלך הסרט) מלחמה, מגפה, שריפת ספרים וקניבליזם, ניצול בודד נודד בדרכים ומנסה כמיטב יכולתו לשמור על צלם אנוש (בקטע אירוני במיוחד הוא מאכיל עכברוש בבשר חתול שצד לארוחת ערב, מה שמעורר עליו את זעמו המוצדק ביותר של חתול אחר בהמשך…). כל זה לא מונע ממנו להפוך למכונת לחימה קטלנית כשהוא מותקף, או לא להיחלץ לעזרת אישה מותקפת כשהדבר נראה לו מסוכן מדי (וכן להיחלץ לעזרת אישה אחרת, בנסיבות אחרות…). בכליו הוא נושא ספר יקר מציאות שיש המוכנים להרוג כדי לשים עליו ידיים ולנצל אותו למטרותיהם הנלוזות. משימתו של ההלך היא להביא את הספר למקום מבטחים שבו ייעשה בו שימוש לטובת ניצולי האפוקליפסה. האם יצליח?
טיבו של הספר הולך ומתברר במהלך הסרט, אם כי שמו המפורש נזכר רק בסוף, יחד עם שמו של ההלך…
