Goldeneye (1995)

In this film, Bond was portrayed by Pierce Brosnan.

M was portrayed by Judi Dench.

After the long period between "License to Kill" and "Goldeneye", the producers recruited Dame Judi Dench for the role of the new M. The character is based on Stella Rimington, the real director of MI5 between 1992 and 1996. In "Goldeneye", Dench's M is cold, blunt and initially dislikes Bond, whom she calls "a sexist, misogynistic dinosaur, a relic of the Cold War". Tanner, her chief of staff, refers to her during the film as the "evil queen of numbers", given her reputation at that point as someone who relies on statistics and analysis rather than drive and initiative.

Dench went on to play M in the 2006 film Casino Royale, which rebooted the series with Daniel Craig as Bond. In this new continuity, M has already worked for MI6 for a while, and at one point she mutters, "God, I miss the Cold War." According to "Skyfall", M was previously responsible for the activities of MI6 in Hong Kong during the 90's. Her ability to run MI6 has been questioned several times; In Casino Royale, she is criticized when Bond is filmed shooting an unarmed prisoner and blowing up a foreign embassy; In "Quantum of Comfort", the Secretary of State orders her to personally take Bond out of Bolivia and stop any investigation into Dominic Green's eco-terrorist organization; And in Skyfall, she comes under public scrutiny when MI6 loses a computer hard drive containing the identities of undercover agents around the world. "Skyfall" marks Dench's final appearance as M, with Raul Silva targeting her for alleged infidelity. She is shot and killed in the film, making her the only M to be killed in EON's Bond films. M (portrayed by Judi Dench) appears uncredited in "Spectre", in a video testament.

There were also brief references to M's family: in "Goldeneye," she reacts to Tanner's "mean queen of numbers" sting and tells him that when she wants to hear sarcasm, she'll listen to her children. "Quantum of Comfort" director Mark Forrester hinted that Dench's casting gave The character has maternal undertones in her relationship with Bond, undertones made visible in "Skyfall," where Silva repeatedly refers to her as "mother" and "Ima'la." In "Skyfall" it is also revealed that she is a widow.

Unlike M portrayed by other actors, Dench's M was never called by name on screen. However, a prop from the last scene of "Skyfall", in which M bequeaths Bond some of her assets after her death, reveals that her character has been named "Olivia Mansfield". Since the character has never been directly referred to by this name, its canon remains unclear.
